Grading The Draft - San Francisco 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers

Brown - The Sporting News - D+

What the heck?! Do these guys get together the day after the draft and collaborate about draft grades? Clifton Brown from SN was way off the mark. But what do you expect from a guy that failed miserably on his first round mock? The only 2 players that Brown "guessed" correctly was Devin Thomas to the 'Skins and Mario Manningham to the Giants...NEITHER IN THE 1ST ROUND. At least I nailed the first 6 picks in my mock AND the 49ers' pick (see my blog "2008 Mock Draft - 1st round). I can't believe it! Brown does this for a living, I do it as a hobby. I must admit, I am a little biased. I believe the 49ers should've graded to a "B". But I think I know my team better than these guys do (see my blog "Keys To A Successful 3-4 Defense"). The Balmer pick was justified. We don't need a d-lineman to come in and rack up sacks. We need a space eater, someone to occupy blockers. That will allow even an average outside backer to be able to put pressure on the QB. I laughed when I saw mock drafts that had Quentin Groves or Dan Connor going to the 49ers in the first round. Those guys would be just as ineffective as the current starters. Balmer was the guy I had top on my list at #29 and I'm glad the 49ers felt that way too.

As for the 49ers not taking a WR. You had to expect that. They signed Isaac Bruce and Bryant Johnson. Sure, none of them are sure fire studs (Bruce past his prime and Johnson unproven). But they were a couple of the best WRs in this year's free agent class.

I do agree to some degree that the 49ers should've taken Limas Sweed in the 2nd round. I also think think that Rachal was a bit of a reach where he was taken. Chilo, please prove me wrong on this. I wish you mother well and hope this also serves as a motivating factor to your success. I just want my team to do well. But the 49ers taking Balmer and Rachal prove one thing about the mock draft.

It proves that the mock draft should be about who you think a team will take with its pick based on its strategies and thought processes and NOT who YOU want them to take instead.
